    Alpaca fleece UQ?

Hi all, In my research investigating alternative natural alternatives to down as a fill for an UQ (way too expensive for me here in Aus), I have come across a few articles on alpaca fleece. It is apparently comparable to goose down in insulating qualities yet is lighter than wool and less prone to compression than wool but compacts like down.

I can get alpaca fleeces locally from a farmer who has a couple of pet alpacas and is selling full fleeces for about $10 each! I plan to buy a couple and try them out. Even if they aren't as good as all that they are a great alternative to down for the price.

Has anyone had any experience dealing with alpaca fleece?

I know nothing about it but am interested to see what the weight is like as well as the temp rating.

Have you ever looked into shipping on My Luxe stuff on ebay? It has 800 fil down. Over the past couple of weeks I've gotten a total of 140oz for an average of $2.27 shipped.

My only experience with alpaca was a hat made in South America. The yarn obviously was quite natural - it stunk to high heaven if gotten wet!

I can remember being most protective of it at the first sprinkle and needing to leave the house the one and only time I tried washing it...

You might want to talk to a couple of artisans who spin the yarn and find out what they do BEFORE they use the wool.
