Four Lakes Loop - Pecos Wilderness

Here's a few pics from my trip with the dog last year in October near Santa Fe, NM. There's a very manageable loop trail hitting four lakes in the Pecos Wilderness area from Winsor TH. The four lakes are Stewart (hang 1 pic) then Katherine (hang 2 pic) followed by Spirit and finally Johnson. All lakes had great hanging spots.
    Trip was 5 days/4 nights Oct 21-24, 2012.
The area is now closed due to June wildfires. Hopefully this loop didn't get hit very hard.

Wow man, what an epic hike.....I love that area. Nice to see what those lakes look like when they aren't frozen!

Great looking adventure. Thanks for sharing. I like the tarp for your dog, nice shelter solution.

Appreciate everybody's comments. I would love to here from folks in the area about what kind of damage so far. Three years ago did a trip from Jack's Creek TH in and around Truchas Peak. That was a grade A trip also.

Yeah, that's Six Moon Designs Gatewood Cape. Works as a Poncho with pack-on hiking. An ultralight shelter for me and the dog, believe it or not. And exclusive shelter for Boomer when hanging. And if I hang low enough I can set the Cape at the gathered end of the hammock to act as a weather break - wind, rain, etc.

Hey Gene, I haven't seen burn maps and compared them to trail maps, but I know the Holy Ghost Canyon was at risk. I think it's safe to say that at least a portion of your route is now burned.

Here is my TR from my winter trip from this last December...

I was afraid of that since the USFS has a alert still on their website banning entry to that district; sounds really bad.

Your winter trip looks awesome; love the Lake Katherine pic. Never take full winter trips but I love those trips with new snow or the remenants of winter.

FYI: Mushers brand ointment for those that hike with dogs. Keeps snowballs off paws or just keeps the pads from cracking. Discovered the stuff after a trip to Jacks Creek early in November 2009 with a couple inches of snow on the last day.

Ya man, it's quite a bummer, most of the Ranger Districts around me are closed...I can't even go hike up into the Sandias. After I looked at a fire map, it looks like the fire may be lower down the canyon from Cowles and the Windsor TH....

Not to mention the smokey smell that is ever present around here during this season....

As far as the winter trip, I was pleasantly surprised that we were able to survive without too much effort (hammock sock was worth it's weight), it wasn't bitingly cold the entire time or anything like that. At least the feeder creeks into the lake were running, otherwise water would've been difficult to obtain!
