    First overnight hang!!

I'll be riding a very long (102 miles), and very hilly (12,722 feet of climbing) bike ride on Saturday. At first, I thought google maps told me it was 1.5 hours drive from home. But upon further investigation, it's actually 3 hours. Being that I only just found this out, and I don't want to pay multiple hundreds of dollars for a room at a nearby inn. I've decided this will be the perfect opportunity to do my first overnight hang. I've found a state park (MD) in the vicinity that I am going to look into.

This realization that the ride location is further from home, therefore I need to plan to sleep near there, has built up my excitement. As well as my anxiety of what my first overnight hang will be like. I've got the necessary gear for a night in the woods. Hammock, suspension, bug net, tarp, sleeping pad, lighting. But it seems like this first overnighter fell into place out of fate more than intention.

If temps are in the low 60s, are bugs as much of an issue? Even if I don't have food at my hang site, should I expect animals to come exploring/investigating during the night? Any tips for my first hang?

Where will you be hanging? Knowing that might help with the responses.

Wild animals are curious creatures and you can never know what they are going to do.
I wouldn't worry about it though. I love the sound of wild animals at night.

I'll be hanging in either Garrett State Forest, or Smallwood state park. Both in Maryland.

Congrats on going on your first hang. I like to hang my pack from a tree to keep the bugs from crawling in. If you have a pad I would look into a pad extender to keep your shoulders warm.

If there's any standing water at all nearby, expect mosquitoes at those temperatures. Any time the temps are above 50-ish at dusk, the skeeters come on out.

Also, congratulations on your first hang! That's also what got me into this whole camping thing...which led to the hammocking thing...which led to the hiking thing...which led to the ultralight thing...wait, I think I might have a problem......

    Heh. Guess I'm safe, then...I'm still riding a 45-lb, all-steel beach cruiser...

Are you camping before or after the ride? If before, you might want to look into sleeping a couple nights in your back yard to get used to it. That sounds like a brutal ride and not the time to figure out that you don't sleep well in a hammock.
