I wonder how much the significant reduction in the bat population has impacted the bugs. We have a colony at our house and their numbers are significantly less than in the past. This "white nose syndrome" seems to be serious. We will pay with more bugs.

They cut the bugs in half at least.

Thanks for the link. Never heard of these. I'll be picking some up to take with on my next outing over the July 4th weekend.

Well we went up fri- mon the 24. We had 1 tick between the two of us. The skeeters were a little bad at times BUT... The biting flys were terrible!!! Swarms upon swarms on us anytime we were near the lake.

went paddling on Saturday with my boyfriend, up a river off of a pretty popular lake. We stopped for lunch, after one piece of cheese, the bugs were so bad we had to leave. I had blood running down my face from one bite, and now look like I've been bitten by a snake on the back of my neck from blackfly bites! This is the worst year in a long time...on the upside... the bush is nice and green after all the rain...(scratch,scratch)

My son and I were backpacking Pic Rox this past weekend and I didn't think the skeets were all that bad considering other years. However, it will heat up this week and they will get rough.

The bottom of his hammock looked "fuzzy" from all the skeets on it with him laying in it. None bit through the DL though.

I've seen a lot worse this time of year. Black Flies not out yet.

I got a hankering to pop up to the SHT to get out there in the bugs and heat. See how fun or horrible it is. I never camp in summer so..............

Those sticks that you light sound good, I will add them to my armamentarium!

But don't any of you fellas or gals use Permethrin on clothing and Picaridin on skin? Might help.

Or are you using it and being carried off anyway?

My cousin and I both had all of our clothing treated with permeththrin and still were getting chewed up!

    Bugs in the Northwoods

What the heck? I can not figure out what is going on. Did u also have something on exposed skin? I have occasionally had mosquitoes land on my skin when wearing permethrin treated closing. But with my combination of the Picaridin and permethrin treated clothing the bugs basically just don't even come near me. It's hard to comprehend people getting ate up by bugs while wearing permethrin treated clothing, but you're not the first one to report this recently.

What brand of permethrin were you using? And did you have either deet or picaridin on any exposed skin?
