    Whoopie Slings fraying at buries?

I made a pair of whoopie slings out of 7/64 amsteel by following a video on youtube. They came out great and work very well; however, I am noticing that at the ends of the buries the amsteel looks like it's unraveling. They seem to hold well despite this but I'm worried that they may weaken after some time. Does this happen regularly because of the widening of the rope and do you think it's something to be concerned with?

I'll try to get a picture when I'm not at work.

I assume you mean where the adjustable loop exits the bury. This is quite normal from my experience. Keep an eye on them and if you don't feel safe, replace them. It takes no time at all for that to happen to a new whoopie, but as long as there is nothing compromised, you should be fine.

Thanks for the timely response. Yes that is the part that I am talking about. It seemed like something that would be common but I just wanted to make sure. How long do whoopies normally seem to last for most people?

I have had mine about a year and hang in my hammock at least 2-3 times per month, some months more often. I check them every time and so far they look good. The continuous loops at the end of my WBBB are fraying just a little where the dutch hook sets in so every once in awhile I undo the larks head and re-tie it so the hook will hit in a little different spot.

If it really does look like it is coming apart, make yourself another set. They get easier to make with each one you do and you are less likely to damage the amsteel with some experience gained by doing more splicing. At least that is my experience.

Normal as stated...it happens with every whoopie sling. It's not fraying, it's just the strands repositioning themselves to make the transition from wide to narrow.

Properly made 7/64" amsteel whoopies should last you for years of use. Check them regularly for wear as like any other component of your set up there is wear and tear with each trip. Replace as you confidence in them diminishes.

I just decided several years ago to replace them at least every 2 years. Turns out that on my most used set up I change them out yearly. Peace of mind.
