    New(b) hangers in East Tennessee

My family and I have enjoyed car camping, but are now gearing up for some backpacking/hammock-camping fun. We're still putting together our meager gear set, and are hoping to score some Grand Trunk skeeter beeter pros for our first outing.

Question! I have a 12x12 (or is it 10x10, I forget...) poly tarp that I've used as an additional rain barrier with our vintage cabin tent that I am planning on taking. The area we're headed to is rife with trees, so hanging spots should be plentiful. Does it make sense for us to plan on putting both hammocks under the one tarp, or should I go ahead and pick up a separate tarp so both can have their own (as a just-in-case)? We hope to have everything in hand several days prior to our trip, so we'll have a few days to practice setting up and taking down as well.

Thankfully, our initial foray into backpacking is a simple overnighter (was that foreshadowing, or did I just jinx us into a 3-hour tour, a 3-hour tooOoOOOur?), so any issues will only affect us for one night...

Any tips or suggestions for first-timers is much appreciated!

    Welcome to HF!

You hail from the land of BIAS Hammocks, give them a quick look. High quality kit. Great prices. Even better customer service.

Poly tarps are a bit heavy and don't pack down too well, but use the heck out of what you have, and don't let it stop you from getting out in the woods.

Two hammocks under either one might get a little tight, should weather turn fowl, but it certainly could and has been done. A little testing in your backyard or a nearby park, would go a long way towards telling you if you actually want to go that way or not.

Another small tarp, or just using your ponchos for additional coverage can hedge your bet, should conditions turn up less than optimal.

Thanks for the heads-up on BIAS. I hadn't heard of them in all my digging! Nice to see that they're tied into the forums and up on what's current.
