Teedee, have you had a chance to use this poncho yet? Could you let us know how it works out? I've been thinking of getting a down quilt but this looks like it could save some serious space in the pack, and wouldn't be as fragile.
Boy this insultex stuff looks very interesting. Hurry up and get that thing so you can test how well this stuff works out.
yea
Gosh Im like an Info Vamp here lately
Use it as an Under Quilt? no. The weather has turned almost summer like, temps in the 70s today. So I will most likely to have to wait to test it properly as an under quilt in really challenging conditions.
Save space in the pack over down? Ahhh - I see, you mean since packing it outside the pack - yes. Most definitely it will do that.
I have fit it as an under quilt for my Bridge Hammocks already and since it is a rectangle it fits my Bridges perfectly. I use 3 strands of 1/8" diameter shock shock cord over the ridge line to snug it up to the bottom of the hammock. The shock cords are spaced 1/4 distance from head, 1/4 distance foot and middle - the middle one is connected once inside the hammock.
I have been thinking of making another Bridge Hammock out of one using 1.75 mm guy line for the arc. I have done this using 1.1 DWR ripstop nylon for pads and it works great. I just use the same pattern as the Bridge so that the two match perfectly and then hang the second Bridge under the primary Bridge with the four corners exactly matched. But the thought of cutting up a $90 piece of gear has me stopped cold right now. Have to build up my nerve . If/When I do do this, I know it will be a great under quilt that can be used alone down to freezing at least. I will also put pad holding strips in place on it so that my GG pads can be used with it also to get me down quite a ways. With the pads laid on top of my Wiggy's poncho liner as an under quilt, I can get down to freezing and a little under in the right conditions. So I'm hoping this Insultex insulation will do even better. Cut as a Secondary Bridge in this manner, the weight will be cut down considerably as well as the bulk. It will have the advantage of lower weight and water proof and breathable and can be stored outside the pack.
It has quite a few advantages.
I wouldn't give any temperature ratings: 1. they vary from person to person, 2. I haven't been able to stress test it beyond the little I did at 29 F to 31 F and was comfortable in a cotton Tee shirt under the poncho+liner.
This review may answer your temperature ratings better.
I've ordered one and I think it will be cold enough here to test it out. Hopefully not for long...
