    Shoulder squeeze

I just returned from a 65 mile hike on the AT. It was a great hike and I loved crawling into my hammock at the end of a long day of hiking!
Unfortunately for the first time I experienced shoulder squeeze (and excessive heel pressure but that's another story)! In spite of my efforts to eliminate it I awoke every morning with pain across the back of my shoulders.( not pack related) What causes the squeeze? Is this more common with single layer hammocks or hammocks made of thinner materials?
I never encountered this problem with my WBBB but seem to experience it more in my WWM and my DUL.

I agree that hang-angle has a lot to do with shoulder squeeze, and the pain you describe is something I've dealt with. My solution was to find the right hangle for my hammock, and to use a small pillow under my neck. The pillow eliminates a lot of the shoulder squeeze sensation by changing the position of your head and neck, and when I use a pillow, I wake up with no pain at all.

Usually with my non bridges, the tighter I ahng em the more shoulder squeeze I get. Of course witht he structural RL models, like my WBBB and HH, there is a limit to how tight I can pull them ( if I am being reasonable) and I have never noticed any shoulder squeeze with those. But with the ones without this RL, it is much easier to hang them too tight and feel the squeeze.

Could you have been hanging too tight?

I've only experienced shoulder squeeze with one hammock and only owned that hammock for a few days as I new it was too narrow for my liking. The WBBB and Wilderness Logics hammocks are what I currently use and they work great for me.

The hammock I was using has a structural RL and no I don't believe I was hanging too tight. The angles were OK. I believe it maybe due to the "stretch" of the fabric. The only way I could get comfortable was sleeping on my side!

I never hang my hammock perfect when backpacking and usually just to tired to fiddle with it. When i'm in the yard though its always perfect. I find when in the woods I can't get the foot end height and length right and that then throws off my angles screwing up the whole works. I use a WBBB and if its not strung up just right it kills my calfs, hung right though its awesome.

I have found that with my WBBB if I dont have my ridgeline snug (unloaded) and my foot end about 8inches higher then my head I have a bit of pressure on my shoulders and my knees seem a bit hyper extended.
