One of my most memorable Car camping trips was one during flash floods which soaked everything, and was so bad we could not get home and had to find a laundry mat and stay another night. Think of all the knowledge you gained during your adventure, and how much better you will do next time.If the weather had been perfect you would not have realized your setup problems and may have made them again in a location that was not as forgiving.

A great report on a great trip.

    1. When I finally loaded my pack correctly and adjusted the suspension to properly fit, the comfort increased. I should have read and followed the product instructions earlier.
    2. Less is more (comfortable).
    3. Maps are important.

My first backpacking trip 20 years ago took a big bite out of the learning curve .

Thank you for posting this wonderful trip report! I always sleep better after the first night too.

Thank you everyone. This is something we *really* want to be able to do. We have so many plans for places to travel and see for years to come. It was obvious the first day that it was going to take a skill set that we did not have yet. I think we will take it slowly and do more car camping until we get better. I was glad to see the fear go away, that could have been a show stopper right there. Waking up after the storm the skies were clear and the birds were tweeting, it was beautiful like a Disney movie and it felt like we added a notch to our belt. We had been there and done that and survived so the next night that it stormed it was no big deal.

Silvrsurfr, our dog Lil'One is a beagle mix. She must be mixed with some other type of snuggle loving dog because it did not take her long to figure out the hammock was THE place to be. She even hops in there in the middle of the day when we are working around camp.

My first backpacking trip was 5 days out on the foothills trail. The first time I saw a camping hammock was the day before we left when they came in the mail. My pack weighted 45 lbs and it was late July (100*). The first time set up our hammocks it was dark and on a steep bank. It rained every day but one.
I learned so many things, but the most important one was that I love backpacking and sleeping in hammocks. The good thing is it gets even better the more you learn.

Great pics! I grew up there (Walhalla) and spent much of my youth in the places pictured. You are making me homesick.
