Sure, but not very often. I kept walking down the trail until I found a couple of good trees. Pretty well guaranteed to happen within 10 minutes or so, unless you're on top of a rocky mountain.

but what about when you are in a National Park that has designated campsites..do you take a chance on getting caught and a possible ticket/fine

I've never been to an area that allowed backcountry camping but had established sites...they make those?

I sleep in a National Park near me. Find a place a few feet (200) from the trail and pick a tree. I find it best to do it on the other side of the hill. No park Ranger thinks to check on the side of a hill for a camper. This is the Hammockers Benefits.

I do always try to stick to park rules and guidlelines, as well as follow LNT. In the Wilderness areas I usually hike, this means trying to use the worn camping spots as often as possible. On the other hand, hammocks are WAY more low-impact than tents so when I have to hang away from used areas, I'm not damaging things that much.

yeah the Smokies...some campsites esp. the popular ones you have to reserve a month in advance, others campsites are non-reservation.

Really? For a pack-in site? Wow...

I have heard that the Smokies are a pretty anti-hammock area though. I guess what you do is really a personal choice - either go back to ground while you're there, or "stealth" it.

I've been to pack-in sites with established areas. Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area is a beautiful area in SC like that. Every place I've been has had trees close enough to hang from.

Ewker - no one is saying hammocks are the holy grail. They're one tool to make the outdoors more enjoyable. If you want to sleep somewhere that needs a different tool (like the desert or on a mountain peak), no one here is going to argue with you that a hammock is the right choice.

But personally, 95% of the places I've been to, whether hiking or in a car, offered some place to hang a hammock w/in a 5-10 min walk. The only exception is in the desert and above treeline. Sometimes I walked a little further if there was heavy undergrowth, though I probably could have made that work too.

I asked a simple question, not sure where you are going with your rant.
