Monkey Wards sold some good machinery back in the day. I would say it is worth having it dealt with professionally.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Totally forgot about the 404, Great Call . Only reason I selected the ones with different stitches is that I use my machines for more than just making straight stitches. I have the button hole attachment with mine.

I hope you can get your current machine sorted out. Its very satisfying to use old reliable gear that'll just keep on working. Big reason I love using my 40 year old Svea 123 stove and 40 year old Zippo.

The 404 is good as is the 403 which uses cams for the "fancy" stitches. The 301 is another good model not often mentioned here.

She is mistaken. The 500A came toward the end of the all metal machines. The "plastic" gears came later. It's only typical problem is the easily broken door hinges as previously stated.

just picked up a 401a for $40 with all attachments and instruction book and a box full of at least 10 feet. the only thing wrong with it is the electrical cable has a loose connection. tested it before I bought it and it ran like a champ. taking it to the repair shop tomorrow to get it fully serviced for $50.

Much better choice for what you are going to do. That's a work horse, and there is no mistake about that.

Now you can take some of that leftover funds and put it towards a good sized purchase of fabric and parts for all your DIY gear!!

I've depended on my 401A for well over a decade now including some time where it was running 20 to 30 hours a week. It's never let me down!!

You made an excellent choice and got a darned good bargain!!

That's great! Sounds like you're going to have a trusty thread injecting work horse to see you through your projects.
