My WB superfly always ends up getting placed in my pack. The extra size and doors just gives the peice of mind that if the wind or / rain starts up im covered.

Re: What is your "Go To Tarp" for backpacking?

My only one real and go to tarp are MacCat Ultra but I'm happy camper with it. One caveat though, seems hard to get those MacCat tarps as of last threads.

Most of the year, the HG 4S

Deep winter, the HG Winter Palace.

There have been summer days bike touring when I was finished riding early in the day and had to deal with direct sun the cuben was a big mistake, would have been better with a silnylon hex tarp i.e. Mac Cat.

But in the end I agree with Canibal, my all around favorite tarp is the Superfly.

Cuben fiber is absolutely worth the expense. My recommendation for an all around one size fits all solution is a cuben fiber hex tarp with a set of cuben fiber grizz beaks. That will cover you for any conditions while only carrying what you need for the conditions. And even with the beaks you'll still be lighter than the smallest sil hex tarp.

Quick overnighters in fair weather, I pack the tadpole. All else, superfly or 4 season hammock gear.

    Cheers

If you do not want the coverage simple tie back the doors and throw it out in porch mode. It is a perfect size tarp and weighs next to nothing. Very durable and strong.
+1 on the HG winter palace.

Weight is amazing on the cuben but it doesn't block the light like my Superfly does ... so sometimes that's a factor as to which I take.
yep the sun shining through in the early morning isn't great. I had 2 Cuben Fiber tarps and sold them both. I lke my Speer tarp and Hamhocker uses the Black Big Mamajamba tarp.

Wilderness Logics Big Daddy with DIY sewn in half doors and nicely appointed Zing-It 2.2 ridge line.

It's my go-to because it's the only tarp I own.

Figured I would chime in with my 2¢. I started with a Kelty Noah 9 which you have to rig in a diamond shape but recently bought a OES MacCat deluxe. I really, really like the Hex shaped tarp compared the the diamond. I feel like you get a lot more coverage with a shorter ridgeline. I can't really chime in on the cuben discussion, if I did have the cash for one of those I think I would get a big winter one because why not have tons of coverage when the weight is so low.
