Polyester or nylon webbing for tarp tie outs?

Sorry if this is already discussed, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I went to my local West Marine today for the webbing I will need for my diy tarp. They had nylon as well as polyester. I thought the nylon sound like it might be a better way to go. Anybody have any insight?

I imagine the nylon would still stretch, especially when it gets wet (as weather protection tends to do). Polyester is good for not stretching, and polypropylene is good for not stretching especially when wet.

Or maybe you won't be using long enough pieces for stretch to be an issue...

Re: Polyester or nylon webbing for tarp tie outs?

I used 1/2' polyester, not sure why, my tarp will tear loonnng before the webbing so it's serious overkill imo, my next tarp I will use grosgrain.

Some vendors use nylon as well, not sure of the difference for tie outs, surely stretch will be negligible on that length of webbing?

Webbing is complete overkill. I have used polyester grosgrain with great success...

I used polyester grosgrain on mine as well. It's lighter than webbing and strong enough for tie outs. The tarp body shoud be the last to fail IMO so really strong line or tie outs are potentially a bad thing. If a line broke of if a tie out ripped, I could fix that in the field better than a long rip or hole in the tarp body. I could be wrong but that's what I've always thought.

Wow! Timezones are cool.... Lol. To think I can post a question before I go to bed, and wake up to five responses. Thanks everyone, I considered the grosgrain idea, but it seemed to weak. I never considered using it like a fuse to protect the tarp body. I like it!

I used 5/8" grosgrain and added 1/2" d rings (beastee dee's from diy gear supply) to help protect the grosgrain from wear from an abraisive guy line.

Nothing wrong with using webbing but if you can go cheaper and lighter and do the same job then why not? I also look at it this way. If anything fails you have the skills to fix it. Learning to DIY has been very liberating for me. I used to be more paranoid about my gear but since learning to sew, I've not been afraid to modify things and after making something I always say I can fix it if it rips or tears.

    Good pt bubba..

Here is an am reply for you...

Grosgrain is stronger than you think. So is fabric. I did a test.. took a 3" unhemmed strip of 1.1 ripstop from diy gear supply. Looped it over a rung if my ladder, slipped a foot in and it held my 215# bulk... even bounced on it ... no failure...
