Hammock Forums Success Story - Upper Sand Creek Lake, Music Pass, CO

I met Ed (Slowanderer) here on Hammock Forums after OutandBack recommended I get in touch with him about doing some fishing here in Colorado Springs. We ended Going to Upper Sand Creek Lake in Music Pass Colorado.

From left to right: Ken, Ed (slowanderer), and me. Ken is the only vagabond that slept on the ground like a Neanderthal.

Upper and Lower Sand Creek Lakes are in the Great Sand Dune National Preserve in the Sangre De Cristo Range in South Central Colorado. Beautiful is an understatement.

I took my 8 month old Yellow Lab puppy, Parker. He couldn't get enough of the lakes and streams. On the flip side, he took a swim a little too late in the day and didn't have enough time for the sun to dry him off. Once the sun went behind the mountains the temperature dropped and he started getting really cold. Ordinarily he was afraid of the fire, but hypothermia made him change his mind. Ed graciously covered him with a fleece jacket and I used my rain gear to keep his body heat in. He ended up getting dry just before dark and was back to his normal self.

The view from my Grand Trunk Ultralight Hammock.

I ripped my tarp right before the trip. Luckily, Slowanderer had a spare JRB 11x10 tarp. All is well with the world.

Ed was using his bridge hammock. Talk about comfortable...

Parker figured out how to hold his breath and find sticks at the bottom of the creek. He was a happy puppy.

We caught dinner...free range, organic, hormone free, cage free, local deliciousness

If you're looking for a fairly short, relatively easy hike (depending on how fast you want to get to your destination), with unbelievable scenery, look no further than Music Pass. I'll definitely be back to catch a few more cutthroats. Ed, thanks for the invite! Thanks Hammock Forums!

Ahh now that's how a trip report is done. Mountains, fish, hiking dog, fish, scenery, fish, hammocks, and to top it all off fish. Thanks for sharing.

You sound like you would fit right in with my dad and me on our camping trips! But I agree, this sounds like it was the perfect way to spend some time in the rockies!

I've done so much, with so little, for so long, now I can do anything with nothing.
