Something For Everyone May 1-3, 2009 Cantral PA

I am proposing a hang in central PA on the weekend of May 1-3. I picked that weekend for no particular reason except it is early in the season and not overly close to the MAHHA Hang.

This is a weekend hang in the same place the whole weekend. We won't be moving from one site to another. But within easy reach of the site there is something for just about everyone. Approved trout water flows right by the sites. White Deer Hole Creek appears on the list of water fished by a local college fly fishing club so I would assume it has promise. I am not a trout fisherman, let alone a fly fisherman so I have no first had experience. It does not appear to be subject to special regulation.

Entrance to the site area is adjacent to trailhead for the Central Mountains Shared-use Trails system. This system covers 120 miles of trails developed for shared use between hikers, mountain bikers and equestrian use.

Within 15 minutes drive from this area is access to the Susquehanna River and some canoe/kayak waters. An hour father will place you at the northern access point for the Pine Creek Gorge and the rapids in the gorge.

Besides the shared use trails there are dedicated hiking trails which can be looped to provide just about any challenge you could imagine. The Mid State Trail is within easy access and can be looped back to the campsite with no problem.

I would propose arrival on Friday night with Saturday a day to engage in whatever activity you want regrouping Saturday evening for a group dinner. Sunday being a day to stay and gab or head for home as the case may be.

A quick view of the camping area and stream is available in the video "I took a Walk Today"

Unfortunately that weekend is still in the fire ban time frame for PA State Forests. That means the possibility of a campfire depends on the wether conditions and can not be predicted until a couple of days before the event.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I don't have a town name but the closest would be Elimsport to the east . 4th Gap Township Road is the road the access is on. It is directly accross from the site of a CCC camp but I can't locate the number of the camp.

OK, found "Elmisport". I have to assume that all those numbers are for those who understand GPS points - not me...<g>... I need to see what my schedule will allow before Trail Days.

I might be able to make it. I say might because I have the MAHHA in April and I'm planning to do the Old Loggers Path with the boys over Memorial day weekend.

Very cool. Thanks. I also tried putting numbers in the NOAA website and got the weather for this spot.

    Gonna bump this...

This is right between MAHHA and Traildays. I picked this date because Trout season opens the weekend before. (April 31) so the fishing may still be fresh. But that weekend seemed to be too close to MAHHA. Unfortunately I can't go to MAHHA this spring due to parental obligations.

There is car camping potential or all the sties are closer to the cars than at MAHHA so comfort is not only possible but encouraged.

Here is part of the trail map

The red lines are the shared use trails, The thick red lines show very rocky trail. The parking for the campsite is at the "P" in the upper center of the map. The labels I applied to the map are too small to see. arg.....

Figured I'd bump this since it is getting closer.

Could be a nice time for the central PA folks to get to know each other. I might even be able to talk my wife into joining this one. But I'm not sure. I do need to get a permit for this so let me know if you are planning on attending.
