    Newb in NY

Hi everyone. My name is Frank, and I'm brand new to this wonderful world of hanging. Not so patiently waiting for the arrival of my HH. I have dozens of questions, I don't even know where to begin. Luckily this site seems full of great information.

If there's anyone from NY, or familiar with NY sites - where can I go use this thing? I live in the 5 boroughs, but would love some places upstate where I can escape. Are there campsites where I can go, or do I need to be "off the grid" so to speak?

    Hope to hang soon!

    Frank

You're ahead of me - I don't even have a backyard. But I'm hitting Home Depot tomorrow to get some pipes to build a DIY stand. I figure that'll come in hand to hang in my apartment, and also if I'm at a site that's hammock-phobic. My bro and his wife are tent campers, so find a site we can all enjoy might be tough. I figure a stand will make things easier.

Welcome from the Jersey Shore. Are you a car camper or hiker?

Right now, I'd be car camping, as I'm just getting into it. I do see myself doing the backpack thing in the future.

    welcome to the addiction!

There is a complete menu of places to hang in NY.
Paid private campsites, paid public campgrounds, drive-in free public campsites, free hike/paddle in public sites,... I am more familiar with the Central and Western Adirondacks and could give you specifics in those regions. I know the same exist in the South and Eastern portion of the Adks (and Catskills) if you know where to go. One place to start would be the NYS DEC website with all the public lands and their specific regulations. For example an (incomplete) list of State Forests is here: http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/34531.html

@DuctTape - thanks for the link! I'll definitely check it out. Would the Lake George region be considered "Central Adirondacks"?

And thanks for the welcomes, everyone.

Welcome aboard from the Lake George region!

I guess I'd consider it "southeastern Adirondacks." And there are tons of places to hammock around here, including the islands on Lake George.

Driving up from the city, the Adirondack Northway (route 87) takes you past a lot of state land where you can follow the trails, enjoy the scenery, and hang your new hammock. Pick up an Adirondack map and/or guidebook. I like the Black Mountain area just a few miles from where I live. The views of Lake George from the top are wonderful.

    Take it easy,

Wow, that view is great! I think I see a trip up your way in my future. I haven't been up there since I was a kid (if you've lived there long enough, I have pics of me at Storytown USA before it became Great Escape). My family and I always stayed in cabins. I'd love to try camping up there.
