    My first winter hang

This is not my first night in a hammock but it was my first real winter hang. I have done two experimental hangs in my garage with the temps at 11 degrees. Those hangs went well but it was just not the real thing being in my garage.

For the past three years our Maine Geocaching group has had a winter campout. I have never had the courage or time to spend the night. Last year the temps were in the teens and that scared me off and kept me from attending. I had to go forward with this years’ campout and stop avoiding it because next year I will be thru hiking the Appalachian Trail and I need to get my gear for the thru hike all worked out. This year I had the outfit to hang without worrying about being cold.

I have included a few pictures that show my hang and my setup. You will see the snow but what you cannot see is how deep the snow is. I have to snowshoe in and set this up with snowshoes on. The snow under my hammock is will over three feet deep. The temps the first night were in the mid 30’s. The second night went to the 20’s. Each night I was so hot I was sweating profusely. I had to continually keep opening my sleeping bag both nights to cool myself down and let the sweat evaporate off my body and my sleeping bag. My next experiment will be to try the Yeti under quilt.

My setup for this trip included the following:
Warbonnet Black Bird double lay hammock
    MacCat deluxe tarp
    Zero degree down sleeping bag
    CCF pad
    Speer Snug Fit under quilt

I have just assumed that you being the Troll and living in Maine that you spent every night somewhere between Stratton and Rangley in 2 foot of snow. I would say you certainly have the right equipment.

Looks like a good setup - did you try the snugfit without the ccf?

    Nice!
I imagine you were sweating at 20 with a zero degree bag, SnugFit, and a pad! I look forward to hearing your results with the Yeti. I've done some side-by-side comparisons with those two quilts, but am curious to see what you have to say. Congrats on being a cold weather hanger. Oh, and trying to get in a hammock with 3' of snow under you is fun huh?

My problem is my belly is too big and gravity sucks! Unless it is hard pack, I'm trying to 'jump' into the hammock as I'm knee-deep in snow.

No I did not try it without the CCF. That had not crossed my mind. Thanks.

I ended up getting a whole cook set called the Gramweenies kitchen KIT--complete !! and replacing the Foster beer can pot with a Snow Peak 700 titanium cook pot and it works well for me so far. I did not have to replace the pot but I am just not to keen on cooking with aluminum.

    .............
Well it sounds like you are not going to have any trouble keeping warm, at least if you can stay dry and block the wind. You might be able to save the pad for much colder nights, and increase your comfort. Or even go with a lighter pad. Don't forget that you can get another 10+ degrees out of that Snugfit ( or Yeti) with a VB.

You'll want to be careful about getting to hot & sweating. That's putting a lot of water vapor through your insulation (clothes, quilt & under quilt), & some of it will want to stick around in your insulation.
Trying it w/o the ccf pad would be a good start, but I would still want the ccf pad w/ me. There are so many variables in weather & the human body that what's too hot one night, may not be enough the next.

Sometimes I find the combination of top insulation to be too much (clothing & thick top quilt) so I may shed some clothing or lay the top quilt on top more loosely, allowing more venting around the edges.
Or I may need to do both to keep from over heating.
But oftentimes before day light, I may need to add some back, so I just keep it handy.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
