How tent-peg slingshot proof is your tarp?

Got a chance to get out this weekend. The WBBB was pegged out a bit too tight to get the shelf nicely out there. When I sat down in the WBBB to get in for the night the peg got pulled out and shot straight through the hammock gear cuben fiber tarp and then landed to rest on top of the tarp. Took me about 5 minutes to find the peg up there in the dark and then saw the whole right beside it.

    What a freak accident!

Good thing HG puts repair kit in with the tarp and it was easy to fix the quarter sized whole made by the peg.

I think that slingshot can actually do some serious damage. Try to slingshot that tent peg on the ground and let's see how it strikes.

I tie off (slippery tautline hitch) to saplings, roots, rocks, logs, etc... so I don't have this problem.

<----tent stake free since 2003 (actually 2008, but that doesn't rhyme).

I'm curious why it happens. Are the guy lines built with tensioners that are doing it or full length shock cord?
    YMMV

I had it happen tripping over my door tie-out with shock cord. I was using titanium shepherd hook stakes. I quit using shock cord on the doors and the titanium stakes. I switched to mini ground hog stakes. More secure than titanium stakes. Not to say it couldn't still happen with the GH stakes but less likely since they hold way better.

A simple solution to this problem would be don't use shock cord with stakes. I have no-stretch tarps (cuben fiber or polyester) so there is no need for shock cord. If my hammock has shock cord pull-outs (my Hennessy does), I don't use them. You could put an eye out with those slingshots, never mind tarp damage. First time I used a shock cord tensioner it sent a stake 50 feet away - I never found it.

Using Zing-it 1.75 mm, I find the stake just pulls out of the ground - no drama. I do keep a loop of shock cord in my survival kit. I figure I could use the shock cord as a sling shot and kill small animals with my tent stakes.

For me it was with no tensioners, I don't use them.

I was using captive shepherd hook stakes half hitched to deadmen in the snow, which had melted in the night unoticed in my deep slumber. The forecast was for snow but it rained instead.

A freak 40 mph wind pulled one side of the tarp out, leaving the stakes flailing and stabbing holes.

A big lesson learned that morning

When I used sil tarps I used shock cord and have shot a few stakes at myself and camping buddies. Luckily no damage to gear or people
