Using a Hammock Gear standard cuben tarp with doors as a tarp tent?

    Hi Everyone,

I've got a hammock gear cuben fiber tent with doors I use while hammocking, but I got to thinking about using it as a shelter when I need to go to the ground as well. It's such a light weight and easy to pitch shelter, I've found I can easily set it up as a tent with my hiking poles for support.

The part I'm wondering about is, how to achieve the security of a tent (enclosed bug netting, bathtub floor) so my wife will sleep in it? I was looking around online, and found a couple of interesting options.

The Sixmoon designs haven net tent looks interesting:

But Im not sure the shape is correct to fit under the HammockGear tarp.

    The Golite Shangri-La 2 Nest:

also seems like an interesting option, and it seems to be the right dimensions to fit under this tarp, but it does not seem to actually be available anywhere online.

My question for all of you is: Has anyone out there tried a similar type of setup? How did it work out? What inner "screen tent" did you use?

Use my Superfly tarp with a Bear Paw Wilderness Designs Net Tent 2

I did a review on it a few months back.

It works great and John at Bear Paw was great to work with in whipping up some custom stuff.

    No problem.

If you check the Net Tent dimensions vs. HG tarp dimensions I'd suggest the silnylon sides on the net tent for splash protection as well as full silnylon "head" and "foot" ends (or cuben like this) as the HG tarp is a little shorter on the sides and the doors are a little smaller than the Superfly that fits the Net Tent 2 perfectly. Any smaller of a tarp and I'd recommend extra side and head/foot protection on the net tent.

Thanks for the info guys. I have a Mamajamba with doors, so this will work just fine.

Check out YAMA mountain gear. He has a diy net tent that would fit under the superfly nicely. Not sure if that is what you are looking for.

When I'm on the ground I always use my Borah Gear bivy, under a tarp or under the stars. It seems to have more uses than an inner net and weighs about 5 ounces.

If it's more for her and you don't mind the exposure (i.e. no net for you), you could try SMD's solo version: http://www.sixmoondesigns.com/netten...y-nettent.html
I have one and it's great but it obviously won't fit you both; quite nice for cutting the wind and the mosquitos while under a tarp or SMD's GateWood Cape.
After comparing the weight with and without a floor and/or net, the wife now often opts for neither - but she had to get there on her own.
