    Cool Hammock Tents

Anyone use a tent over their hammock? Saw a guy on Youtube with a MSR Twin Brother shelter that he used to put his hammock in. I think he did it mainly in the winter. Seem to work pretty good, though wouldn't be good for backpacking, car camping or hauling on a sled. So, was just wondering if any other hangers out there ever tried this?

My Superflies are pretty much tents for hammocks. Especially the original one:

That's as close as I'm getting though. I don't trust things with floors.

Where did you get that superfly? And just to let you know, the MSR Twin Brother is a floorless shelter. I'm thinking about getting one but, they are a bit pricey.

Meh....the MSR Twin Brother will require you to have at least 14 feet or better between the trees, it weighs 5 lbs and is just too much for the average hanger, IMO. I will stick with my Superfly also. Plus it's about twice the price!!!!!

It is the prototype Superfly. One and only unique item. It has some design flaws that got hammered out in the production models, but it was the talk of the trail that year on the AT. I'd sell it to you, but you'll probably need a second mortgage.

    Well then, I'd consider it.
Still, the winter tarps out there would put it to shame in just about every metric. If you had it laying around I guess it would be fun to play with, but I'll be sticking with my snazzy tarps. I do like MSR stoves though!

There are a number of cottage vendors who have tarps with doors. Check out www.theultimatehang.com and go to the manufacturer part. Lots of options. Enjoy your search.

    Back to hammock tents

They're good for winter. I like the floor in mine, but it's tiny - much smaller than the hammock, because it doesn't need to be large. A sewn-in floor solves the problem of losing small objects in the snow.

Another advantage of hammock tents: warmth.

Yeah. I modded an old tent to test out some ideas I had floating around. For the most part it worked well. Weight was the only downside. The testing was for winter use anyway.

That was wawhiker. You can see several videos of his development of this shelter system on his Utube channel. Here is one of the earliest in the series...
The road to success is always under construction.
