    Napali Coast

I am hiking the Kalalau Trail in Kauai the last week of August and this will be our first backpacking trip that we will be hanging. I am curious if anyone has any recommendation for how much insulation we will need. The average low there is 75 during that time of year. I was considering just taking sleep sheets, but I just have not slept in the hammock in temperatures cooler than 80 and I am curious if it will get cool if it gets below 75. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Probably different for everyone depending on whether you are a hot or cold sleeper.

Down to 65 I'm fine w/ a single layer hammock and a light sheet or maybe woobie top quilt.

Below 65 I like some bottom insulation.

A breeze of any kind changes this a bit.

Congrats on that trip. That might be the most beautiful stretch of the Earth I have ever seen.

    Weaver,

If you have been on the trip, did you think the night time temps were very cold? I have been to Kauai a few times, and I know I usually have a sweatshirt on in the mornings, but I have never considered what insulation I would need if sleeping outside there.

Have been there many times, might be there in a couple of weeks visiting family and friends. Long time ago lived west of there for a few years.

Low temps in the mid 60's currently.

A poncho liner underquilt would be plenty.

I spent this past Feb on Kauai, with a week on the Napali coast ; I was fine with a sunshield pad, summer weight TQ and poly pro longies for sleeping. I traveled light, no need to carry more than a liter of water (I used a squeeze bottle filter.) I took my time, hiked the trail barefoot, and explored. No bugs, lot's of mud (but it washed right off!)
You are required to camp at one of the the 2 designated sites, but there are plenty of places to hang a hammock. I spent a some time on the grassy bluff @Mile 8, and made dinner while watching whales play below till dark.
    Aloha!

+10 on the beauty thing. Kauai is a real treat and you won't be disappointed. I haven't hiked that trail but I understand it's tough and has some sheer cliffs dropping right into the ocean. Be careful and enjoy. Also, while there are no snakes there, there are centipedes and their bite will make you wish you'd been shot instead. Check your boots and clothes before you put 'em on. I've seen Na'Pali from the ocean and from a helicopter and I've seen the Kalalau valley from the top (end of the road up Waimea canyon). Absolutey stunning. Returning here (Canada) after a few weeks there in the summer made me wonder what happened to all the color. Can't wait to go back again.
