Wondering if there's a list of common errors hangers make...I prefer to learn from the mistakes of others. Especially if it can send a spike flying into my head or tear my hammock during the hike.

Not hanging the foot end of the hammock 6" to 1' higher than the head, to keep one from sliding down to one end all night.
Not understanding convection and the need for properly executed under insulation.
Not understanding the performance differences of Poly vs Nylon in conjunction with suspension materials.
Differences between Structural and Continuous ridge lines.
Dynamic forces involved for the above.
Signature suspended
I haven't come across such a list but a if you've seen shugs vids you'll know to put the whoopie "on the knot, not the toggle!"
I have fallen twice, both times because I never spread the fabric out behind me to recline.
+ what rolloff said.
Not as much of an issue now, since many have moved away from rings and webbing suspensions, but one of my common mistakes (especially after a couple of beers left cooling in a stream) is forgetting the back-up knot. Takes about 1.2 seconds to remember it.
Trust nobody!
Forgetting tree straps on trees.
Getting in the hammock with sharp or pointy things on person.

Too tight of a hangle.

Sitting down on the under-quilt, not the hammock. Not that I've done this but I've seen the results. Hi Fronkey!

(alias ProfessorHammock on youtube)
1. Waiting several months before buying an underquilt. This was far superior to the pad and a total game changer for me.
2. Buying an underquilt. This opened a flood gate; Top quilts, multiple hammocks, way too much Dutch gear, yards and yards of Amsteel, Lash-it and Zing-it. Now sourcing fabrics for DIY stuff.
Not sure if that helps but good luck
Still use my rings for car camping and I have made that mistake alot and probably will still make that mistake for years to come.
Guess its from the constant adjustments to the hammock to get the perfect angle dialed in. Make a bunch of adjustments and you might forget to put a slippery half hitch on one of them.
Too much talkin and readin, not enough hikin and hangin!
