    using climbing gear for suspension?

    is it safe to assume that, using the climbing gear that I have, ropes etc will suffice for hammock suspension? I have some old equipment it's in really good usable shape that I hate to see just laying around when I could probably use it for something else like hammock suspension... carabiners, flat harness braid and the thinner dia rope... weight is a factor but, not a game changer. Thoughts...opinions?
    It's not the glide in the ride, it's the swing in the sling...

    The biners will work fine and so should the rope if it's static rope. Nylon webbing and dynamic rope will stretch too much. If you're using it for backpacking eventually you'll wanna go with something lighter. Climbing gear is probably the heaviest kind of suspension you can have.

    Climbing gear is generally nylon based. The nylon is intended to stretch to lessen the shock of a fall.
    With a hammock, the stretch can be problematic. You'll hang your hammock and once it is weighted, the suspension (nylon webbing or rope) will now stretch. And you'll end up dragging bottom in a few hours.
    If its all you got, use it.
    If you can get polyester webbing for your suspension, do it. It saves having the stretch issue. And keeps your butt off the ground.

    just love those pretty climber's biners

    you know, the ones that are anodized in loverly colours...

    the guy @ the store said they were rated for a gazillion key-low(not fig)-newtons and wouldn't fail, even when challenged by my lardus bottomus maximus, swinging in a hammock

    since i motocamp, weight isn't the issue, as w/ hoofers and i do really like the convenience of the biners, in my suspension system

    you will want to be leery of using nylon lines, of any form, in your suspension, as ole mother earth is what we are attempting to elevate ourselves above and nylon will put you back in touch with her, eventually

    maybe using your climbing lines to secure your bear bag(s) would be a respectful form of re-purposing

    just an old man's ramblings

    Okay, so I'll nix the nylon for suspension and get myself some poly straps. The biners I have are old school so they aren't pretty colors. Just good 'ol metal grey, probably from the 60/70's I'm sure. They should do the trick. I'm going to replace the "S" hooks with biners. Just seems a little safer to me... I'm not at the 250lb weight limit for the hammock so it should be okay. Thanks for the insight!
