If you lost all your gear and had to start from scratch.

I'm curious to know what gear you'd buy, or DIY again and what different gear you'd get if you had to do it all over again. To make it helpful to our newcomers it'd be nice if you could say why you'd do what'cha do. I'm kinda curious as to how people got to where they are with their gear and what upgrades are on the horizon too.

DIY - rebuild what I have now, but buy the quilts from Paul.
My rig is a bit different than most you see around here because of where I go. The Northern Rockies have a lot different temperature ranges and it very seldom is over 60 at night. Not much rain, but it's often driven by high winds at altitude.
I have yet to take off my 20* UQ which is covered with a quilt protector.
My bug net is a bit different too. Net sides with water repellent ends and top strip. It's set up for wind & rain protection under the tarp that I put half doors on. The changes from "standard" have evolved out of need.

    Tarp half doors:

if I had to start over with all new gear. I would buy a sewing machine first and then DIY everything.

I would probably end up buying all the same equipment. I love my WBBB 1.7 dbl's for " car camping", my lite owl for lounging and reading after a long day, my young cousins love using my HH's for camping. My enos are perfect for leaving in the truck for short notice hanging. Oh and I can't forget about my switchback, that's just my go-to hammock if I don't know if going to be buggy or not...... So to some it up, I'm a hammock hoarder I've excepted it, and I know that would never change.

    I love my stuff...

A WBBB XLC dbl. 1.7 for camping.
    An ENO Doublenest for guests.
A GT Ultralight for the back yard.
An ENO Guardian bug net for either of the last two hammocks.

    A Warbonnet Superfly tarp.
A OES MacCat Deluxe tarp for fair weather or going light.

An Underground quilts 40* long UQ with overstuff for most camping.
A Kick *** Quilts New River long UQ for wet weather or car camping.
1/4" and 3/8" DIY Landau foam pads for warm weather or supplementing the UQs.

A Jacks R Better Sierra Sniveler wearable TQ for cool/cold weather camping.
A Jeff's Gear Hammock/Pack cover (from J. R B.) for covering my pack and/or hanging gear under my hammock.

Lots of Dutchware to make things easy to set up.

The only thing I might consider would be a Cuben tarp w/doors (HG Winter Palace) to save some pack weight.

    Take it easy,

    - I would again with a Blackbird, likely a dbl. 1.1 (I have the dbl 1.7 now)
    - A tarp from Wilderness Logics (currently I have a tadpole which is great but the "New Tarp" is intriguing)
    - quilts I would DIY again (down of course)
    - diy overcover as well
    - Along with Whoopies, links and straps all DIY
    - I would also have a backup dbl 1.1 gathered end for non-camping use.

Buy another fully set up Hennessy bottom entry and have Donna do a Mod 1. ;-)

I really like SnrMoment's bug net. That is something I would go for if I made another hammock. Might add a wind cover on one or both sides over the screen.
    YMMV

I would avoid integrated bugnets or anything with a zipper. I have three hammocks with integrated bugnets and zippers and hate them all. I need to be able to escape my hammock at a moment's notice whether it be to take a whizz, combat a wild animal, or just to run naked through the woods.

I would also not waste money on cheap tarps - the tarp is the most essential piece of equipment. Don't skimp on tarps.
