Hammock aside, you use those to tie down a motorcycle? In a truck or flatbed? And they don't come loose? I would think ratcheting straps would do a MUCH better job securing a motorcycle...

To nit pick a little, it is generally considered best to move the biner around the tree farther so the webbing runs straight through it rather than hooking back on itself hairpin style. The biner is subject to less weight, although with a climbing rated biner that is not significant. But more to the point, the webbing experiences less stress and less abrasion from the biner. I don't get paranoid about it, but I usually try to hang my webbing straight through.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I generally do just that. But at the same time I don't always pay too much attention to it also. I weight 185lbs and the 200 lb working load of those straps is a 6:1 ratio. I have 100 more yards of other straps to mess with if the smooth biners ever wear into my straps. It's more than safe enough for whatever I dish out to it. Now on my Dynaglide suspension, you can bet I am very careful with ever part of the suspension. But it's good that you pointed it out for other people to take note of. Some may be working with heavier loads and lighter straps.

All of the above plus ferries, pick up trucks, etc. I have ratchet straps and they work too, just unnecessarily complicated sometimes and just as prone to slipping in my experience. Besides, you're not suspending a motorcycle, just preventing it from tipping over.

There is always something that would do a MUCH better job at just about anything. Heck, I'll bring an anchor chain to suspend my hammock

Re: Why is this a bad idea?

I got my second w00t hammock in today and figured this is a perfect opportunity to rework my suspension based on all of your recommendations. Here's how it looks now:

EDIT: I decided I didn't like the metal to metal contact on the rings so now I have this:
