Well, the easy answer is: How long can your hammock stretch? because you likely ain't gonna put a tarp up over different trees than what your hammock is using.

You'll have to add some length for the tree diameter, though. I currently have 50' of cord + a 20ft extension if necessary.

But sometimes, depending on the tarp your using. A kelty 9x9 or 12x12 for example may be better strung in a different configuration, or if your hammock breaks or there's not enough trees to even use a hammock, or if you're trying to fit more than one hammock under a single tarp, etc. Then you might want a different length ridgeline, OR just have more extensions.

ALSO: I put this in another thread and now that I've tried it I can offer my review:

For my tarp ridge line I use Z-Line Spectra. You can get it at Zpacks.com

    1.25 mm Z-Line
    .033 oz / yd
    1 gram / meter
    .55 oz / 50 feet

    1.5 mm Z-Line
    .053 oz / yd
    1.6 grams / meter
    .88 oz / 50 feet

Both cords are over 200lbs tensile strength.

Available in Yellow, or Black. The yellow cord is extremely bright and easy to see as guy-lines. It is not reflective but it does stand out well at night with a headlamp.

Currently I am using the 1.5 as my ridge line with the 1.25 as my prussik cordage. The figure 9 slips ever so slightly during tensioning, but I think if I wrap it another time it'll hold better. It did not slip over the course of the night. I'm also sure that once the string gets a little dirty and breaks in, the prussiks will hold just fine. I had absolutely NO problems with the prussiks used to center the tarp; they held taught all night long. Winds were low, however so more testing will be necessary. The cordage is light, pretty, and fairly easy to handle. It hasn't tended to knot up too bad.

    Hope this helps!

Arrowhead Equipment and Whoopieslings.com both sell tarp ridgelines, and they are both 30ft. I would think that is about right unless you routinely set up in redwood forests.

I have 30' and carry 2 multi use 10' extensions with eyes on each end. I say multi use because I use them for lashing gear and other things during the day. I have only had to use one extension, one time when hanging from some large Ponderosa's. If you rememper to take it down and stuff it in revesre from the direction you put it up, the right end always comes out 1st.
We are now ready to start our way down the Great Unknown. We are three quarters of a mile in the depth of the earth. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknow river yet to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we know not. Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869
