    Diabetics and Under Quilts

    Hi guys,

I figure that for a diabetic a winter under quilt would be best if it was full lengthed. I base this on nothing but a hunch. As a diabetic, you always need to take extra care of you legs and feet (circulation), so I figure that more instalation would bebetter,

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

    Pete

Not an insulation expert but I am a registered nurse, so for what it's worth... I think as long as you stay warm it won't matter what insulation you use, but I think you could argue that a full length UQ might be easier to ensure that you didn't come off your pad during the night. There are some good candidates out there (I went with Hammock Gear's Incubator). You could also invest in some quilt clips from Dutch to make sure your quilt stays nice and snug around you.

Dry socks just for sleeping are awesome too. Make sure the bands aren't tight (or cut 'em off). I like merino and possum blend for a high degree of toastiness.

I am a diabetic also and use 3/4 HG Phoenix UQ and have never had problem with my legs. Used Closed cell foam pad before that.

I think part of your answer depends on how tall you are relative to the quilt length. I also think clean dry socks, good hat, and a closed cell foam sit pad under your feet should do about as much as can be done. Also assume you are in clean, dry, long underwear.
    YMMV

I don't sleep well at all unless I'm toasty warm, I've had really good luck with my HG Incubator 20 keeping me warm head to toe. I'm 6' and haven't needed anything other than the Incubator.

I'm a diabetic too. I used a Jarbridge and a full length thermarest at 7F and was fine. I also put a cheap emergency blanket between me and the UQ and threw a blanket on top of the ridgeline to give myself a micro-climate. The only thing I didn't like was the thermarest kept sliding (even though I let the air out). If I had money for a winter setup, I would buy a full length UQ and not have to deal with the pad moving. So...UQ and pad works fine.
