NY> 8/15-20 4th Annual Adirondacks Canoe/Kayak Adventure

Well, it's time for my 4th annual trip to the Adirondacks for a little wilderness canoe/kayak hammock adventure. My first night in a hammock was four years ago at Lake Lila! Wow, how time flies.

I usually go with a couple of brothers I know, but the last couple of years my 14-year-old and 21-year-old son have accompanied me. My 19-year-old daughter wants to come this year, and my wife thinks she wants to come (though I can't imagine that happening).

This year we are paddling down Little Tupper Lake to Rock Pond. It's possible that we will paddle further to Lake Lila. If you're interested in coming, holla!

It's a logistical nightmare to find people in that wilderness. I drive up with my youngest son from NJ, my son comes from Boston, and another party comes from MA/CT. Cell phone coverage is spotty/nonexistent. Last year we had the bright idea of using two-way radios, but they didn't really work well. It was a miracle we found each other.

Wish I could meet up with you... I love that neck of the woods. I did a great week-long canoe camping trip in the Bog River/Hitchins Pond/Lows Lake area last fall. Canoe-kayak camping is wonderful! It's nice to be able to bring almost anything you want, vs. bringing only what you're willing to carry on your back....

I'm a big fan of Little Tupper Lake and Rock Pond. I'll be back there, sooner rather than later.

Has anybody done the Little Tupper to Lake Lila traverse? There was a recent legal case that opened the waters on private land to canoers along Shingle Shanty Brook, eliminating a 1-mile section carrying your canoe.

The more I look at this traverse, the less I think I'm capable of carrying my canoe a mile or two. It's a huge Old Town Discovery 169 that weighs 85 lbs. I've carried that canoe 1/3 of a mile, with another person, and that just about killed me. It sure looks beyond my abilities and gear, especially considering I'm bringing my two sons (21 and 14 years old). Of course, I could rent a lighter canoe.

When I discuss this with the sons, they'll probably give a thumbs down to doing the whole traverse. We'll probably end up sticking to Little Tupper Lake and Rock Pond, but it's nice to dream of canoeing through some beautiful scenery all the way to Lake Lila. We're just not that good at portages.

The roots and rocks on Adirondacks portages destroy most canoe cradles, from what I've seen. I'm sure they make good ones, but they look like more trouble than they're worth.

After consultation with my sons, they are not in favor of extended portages this year so we'll be sticking to Little Tupper Lake and Rock Pond.
