Forces me to wonder, and please don't take offense gargoyle, if the hanger's weight and the fabric weight don't factor in. A heavier hanger in a hammock made from lighter weight fabric, should force the weave open more. Don't know if that would also be a factor in a double-layer, but I wonder if those that have been bitten through the double-layers were heavy hangers, or moderately heavy hangers in 1.1 rigs?

I've hung my new WBBB XLC dbl. 1.7 in the back yard a lot of times for lounging /reading (no UQ or pad) and despite a very healthy mosquito population, none were able to bite me through the double layer.

This week, I sprayed the hammock with Permethrin, so I'm not going to worry at ALL.

    Take it easy,

My understanding is that for a mosquito to bite you through cloth, it has to get its beak between the threads. So when you add another layer that ends up having a different orientation there will be very few places where there is a straight shot through to your skin. Add a little permethrin and you're probably down around a 0% chance.

This is what Tom Hennessy has to say about mosquitoes penetrating double layers.

I think the key is two layers of tightly woven fabric. I bought the HH Deep Jungle for this very reason. I spoke with Tom about mosquito protection at Trail Days, and he claimed they could not bite you through the double layered bottom of his Deep Jungle. It appears he was right. I have slept many nights since then in my Deep Jungle in heavily infested areas with no shirt on, laying directly against the hammock fabric. I have yet to get a single bite through the bottom. Of course if I flop my hand or foot against the mosquito net they can get me there.

I can vouch for the accuracy of this comment. I once saw a mosquito in Timmins kill a man. Bit right through the side of his Ford F150. It has to be true because everything on the internet is true, right?
But seriously, being caught out in the wilds in Northern Ontario, in June, with no repellent... is disastrous. Made that mistake on a recent day hike while scouting for a good crown land site. On a more related note, I've never had a bite through my WBBB 1.1 dbl, and I'd consider myself a heavy hanger (6'4" and 260). I've also never treated my hammock so I'm curious how it could happen.

I wonder if not only weight plays a role, but also if clothes are worn for sleeping. Two layers of hammock plus shirt/pants will probably be difficult to penetrate.

Since I'm a very cold sleeper, I never sleep without some kind of insulation from below. I got bitten once on the hand, but I suspect that I pushed it against the netting while I was sleeping.

I was shirtless (I'll spare y'all with the video) when I was bit. So I'll agree with this theory and not because of my excessive girth.
    yep, no shirt, thats it..
