DIY Climashield APEX 5.0 oz Top Quilt

Made this bad boy last night in about 2 hours. Pretty good for being my first ever attempt at making something of this nature. I've only made one hammock and a stuff sack to go with it before so I'm very happy how it turned out. I used 1.1 oz Woodland Camo RipStop for the shell and Climashield APEX 5.0 oz (Thru-Hiker). I am no Thread Injector Professional, but I'm learning. Loft is about 1.5" and should be good down to about the mid to upper 30's. Total weight with stuff sack is 22.9 oz or 1.43 lb's. This TQ could be compressed further, but I don't have a compression sack for it yet.

Looks better than one I made for the wife recently.

I got the Clamashield Apex from Thru Hiker too. Just trying to find a cheaper source. I figured that the Clamashield was 90% of the project cost.

Did you sew the foot box or use a draw cord ? I tapered mine and used a draw cord.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

I just went ahead and sewed the foot box. The next one I make I will attempt a cinch cord and velcro. Thank God for Hammock Forum members, Youtube, and Google, or I would have had no idea on how to make this thing!!

Looks awesome! Was looking at something like this with Climashield for my next project. And matching UQ.

I agree, your quilt looks great. I am planning an underquilt from the same materials. Keep us posted on your next cool weather experience with it.

    WOW! Way to go there!!

I use the same insulation in my EE 40F top quilt and I must say I'm a huge fan of it. I also agree that it is a solid 35F quilt from my springtime outings. This is subject to individual metabolisms but for me it is wonderfully sufficient.

40F is exactly the point where Apex shows it's superiority over down in weight vs warmth while considering durability and toughness. Also, never any shifting to worry about. I once spent 3 hours in the rain in my hammock using only the quilt as protection. It was 52F and 2am. Rained quite hard. I slept well for 3 hours until the puddles formed on my pad.

You should be very proud of your talent....and your choice in materials.

    Gonna do this one

Ok, you really got me going. Think I'll do the top quit first. What was your dimensions? Sewing job looks awesome. Did you stack nylon over Apex, sew
and then pull inside out? Seen this method used with Apex and UQ.
