Just curious on how often they need to be replaced?
Just curious on how often they need to be replaced?
Been wondering that too...
I've been pullin on mine for over a year now, and can't see any noticable signs of wear or problems. I've got materials on hand to make new ones, but can't see the sense if there's nothing wrong with the ones I'm using. I think if a person hangs in exactly the same location repeatedly, the whoopies might tend to wear more at the points that see repeated stress. In my case, I hardly ever hang at the same place twice, so I figure I'm spreading the love all over my whoopie slings and they should last a good long while.

I have some paires of whoopee slings that are 3 yrs old and still going strong. Depends on how much you abuse them and use them I guess..but if they fray a little,,I just take a lighter to the frays and burn them without melting the rope. Its amsteel and amsteel is made to last. You will hear from some hangers,,they change them out maybe once a year..but I have yet to have a set break. If you change them out,,use them for other things, as amsteel really doesn;'t break down and degrade. I have also used amsteel roping on a winch on my Jeep now for 4 yrs and still going strong as well..and see no need to change it out either. I keep it clean, and if the ends have been stressed where the hook is,,just cut it off and re-splice back on.

Well if you like to read the technical stuff....http://www.samsonrope.com/Documents/...MPE%20Rope.pdf or the inspection areas of this paper http://www.samsonrope.com/Documents/...AY2013_WEB.pdf
All good stuff above. Many of us have whoopie slings that have been used frequently for many years. Properly cared for, they should serve a long time. But always be sure to inspect prior to use.

U of Miami (Florida) 1980-ish (?) released a study that concluded that nylon and the like fibers lost 50% of their strength after one year.
Seems like the extreme case to me - what about seatbelts for example?
However I have persoally experienced various plastics breaking down in one year or thereabouts. YRMV of course.
I'll be keeping a beady eye on the cord keeping my buut in sling!
