Peters Mountain Overnight AT in PA

I took my daughter and two of her friends out on the AT for an overnight. The weather was really bad, we had highs of 95 and 97 with oppressive humidity. In addition the week before had been really wet, so the bugs were out in massive force. Here is the video that I made.

Some stills from the hike. My setup at the shelter campsite. I had everyone's packs under my tarp since a sprinkle moved through.

My daughter lacing up to head out.

Some views from the hike. North from a power line cut and some through hikers enjoying the view from table rock.

After a night on the trail it was time to head out for the second half of the week at Scout Camp. My setup there complete with LED lights across the porch. Thankfully the bugs were down to a normal level, but the temps ranged from 93 to 98 with lows in the 70s...no bottom insulation needed.

Overall very enjoyable, even with the heat and humidity....sure glad I wasn't stuck on a cot in a canvas tent.

Great that you could get out with your daughter, even under the buggy conditions. Did you climb up the AT northbound, or hike in from the north. I remember that climb from the river being a steep one.

kudos on getting out despite the heat. it's all in your perception, right? hot, but not as hot as in the tents...way to be!

That’s a bugger of a buggy place. Good thing you have a bug net. Yes, get out there and have fun, good motto! Thanks for the report, googie!

I took the girls in northbound, not the steep climb from the river. We did this section a little over a year ago with our scout troop. First year scouts took the easy northbound way in and the older scouts (myself included) came in southbound from the river....you're right it was a good climb. Although doing the 400+ feet down to the spring and back felt almost as bad....the bugs were worse around the spring, especially with your hands occupied.

    Good pictures PAcampingDad.

( I had a PA camping Dad who introduced us to hammock hanging in the woods 55+ years ago. )

Wonderful morning portrait of your daughter.
Expect the girls will remember the hike ( more than all the bugs ) into their far decades.

    Nice minimal summer setup.

Thanks, I think she will remember it fondly, I'm not sure about her friends though

As far as the minimal setup goes, I was a little concerned about not having under insulation so I brought my underquilt on the hike. I found that having my underquilt in my gear hammock it could provide a little insulation (depending on the position of the quilt in the gear hammock) to my butt if desired. I left the underquilt home when I went to scout camp and just used a fleece blanket as under and over insulation.
