Shug---these cool avatars that move use what is called "animated gif" files. If you google on those keywords you'll find tools---some of them free---you can get to make these.
What it is, all it is, is a sequence of images, one flashed after the other.
attroll's is fancier still due to the way he made the image sequence. Takes photoshop or something like that. The key idea is to have one image overlay the other, and with each frame change the mixture and possibly also the opacity of each.
What you end up with is a file with a .gif extension, like an ordinary still .gif image, but with magic built in.
keeping on topic---I too like some of the podcasts on practical backpacking.

When I tried to register for PBF, they weren't taking new members for some reason. It was like a two month process just to get registered. There sure isn't much activity on there. The Gear Swap forum is definitely lame, nobody can sell anything if someone has to spend a month trying to register just to see what's available. I'm not sure how many posts I've had moderated, but there's been a few.
A year ago I tried to register with my college email address because it said they didn't like yahoo or gmail. I guess it wasn't good enough either. oh well.
Not to get off track again but I created mine in photoshop.
I was ok with Practical Backpacking's over moderation as it seemed he was just trying to keep a clean forum. That was until I realized he had taken my photos I had uploaded and plastered his logo all over them like he owns them (it appears in the last few months he has done this with all the photos there). I haven't went back and read the terms and conditions again, and whether he has a legal right to them, I don't know. After that I decided I would never post on his forum again. Which is too bad because he has a good presence on the Internet but his policies and condescending tones really drive the users away.
I have been banned from Practical Backpacking now for several years.
Several times I answered the question a person SHOULD have asked rather than the one they did ask. Those replies were edited or deleted. I have had my time wasted before and will again. Irritating, but not a deal stopper.
He banned someone for a minor infraction and I asked him to cancel my membership as a protest. He set the forum to deny access for my email account.
I have better things to do with my time, but I wish him well.
It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.

I agree with the many comments that PBF is run with a heavy hand, but the way I see it is he runs a tight ship. I can't say I agree with all the policies, but, to provide credit where it's due, I've learned a ton from the posts there, and I thoroughly agree with his "comfortweight" philosophy. Additionally, since it's not as active as WhiteBlaze, I find it easier to keep up with. Besides, we can't expect all forums can be run as well as HF.
