Is a rolled hem foot necessary?

I'm about to actually sit down and begin working on a project that I want to be proud of. Which means actually taking my time and doing rolled hems on my edges instead of just folding the fabric over and sewing it

My question is, does the foot make it easier?

I've found that the foot doesn't work well, but some people have been able to work with them. I find marking the fabric with a barely visible mark or something that can be removed is much easier and you can get really good looking results. If your hem is going to be .5", for example, just make a parallel hash mark 1.5" from the edge of the fabric, and make them every 6" or so. Then, as the machine is pulling the fabric in, just get the hem in position (using the hash marks).
Potential is nothing without hard work.

I don't like them... My preferred method is to roll the hem to a "line" on the ripstop material and just follow it.

Used my Roll Hem foot on several hammocks and have had little to no problems with it.. Think I got lucky with my foot...Alot of people say they have trouble with their roll-hem-foot attachments.

I've never been able to get them to work. My professional seamstress wife doesn't like them either. So the short answer is "No.. not required".
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

+1 on not needing it. I just do the roll by hand and sew. It goes much faster than you think.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

I had pretty good luck on my first attempt at it the other day. It made a small hem that I could not have done by hand.

Now I wish I was using ripstop

Going to try Boulderman's suggestion about marking where the hem will end up every 6" or so.

The next question is, can i get away with a 1/4" hem? Or should I stick to 1/2" as per Boulderman's example? Taking a total of 2" off the width of the fabric seems a little excessive, but I'm not an expert by any means.

I bought two different ones and can't do a thing with them. At first I thought it was me but after trying and trying and trying and not going more than a few inches before something bad happened, I gave up.

The typical rolled hem presser foot makes a very narrow hem for such things as a shirttail or handkerchief.

Specialized rolled hem attachments come in a wide variety of hem widths but your machine needs to have the two mounting holes it's the bed.

Like many others, I haven't had either to work for me, but can do a 3/8"-1/2" rolled hem as I go, very quickly...no marking necessary once you get your eyeballs trained.

Here's a thread on making a (free) rolled hem attachment if you want to give it a try.
