They are. They hold the hammock in a set position and take on load every time the hammock is loaded. I have one of these with a structual ridge line and the same set up for a bug net. My niece uses it every time she spends the night now. We are actually set up right now for tomorrow night when she comes over.

They are not supposed to be guitar-string tight, although mine has a tendency to be pretty taught I just meant it is still the suspension holding your weight, and the RL is just there to provide you with sag.
I may be dumb, but at least I'm ugly!

I've done so much, with so little, for so long, now I can do anything with nothing.

If I want to try a ridgeline should I just run some paracord from biner to biner? Or special rope in some other location? How do I know proper length?

Length comes from trial and error. Find a sag that feels good. I made a really long whoopie for my first RL, and I found I get my best lay around 95-96". Since it was adjustable I didn't have to worry about it being too long or too short.

I started with paracord and just tied it around each of the black cords at the end of the walmart hammock.

And also true. I just didnt want someone to try a non load rope there and find out the hard way that it does take some weight.

Yeah I see where I should have mentioned that bit, Postal. I guess I just assumed people here would use something like amsteel or paracord and not twine . I should do less assuming and just be thorough the first time around!

We give one away every year at our son's school for bringing the most box tops the last month of school. We call it the lazy days of summer contest.

....and don't forget to check the clearance item sections. Picked up one for $12.00 and another at $10.00 at two different Wal-Marts. The first one was found with the lawn and garden clearance and the other was found in sporting goods.
