Is it really necessary? My hammock has ropes that came with it. I tried it in my yard and it doesn't seem like it will harm a tree.

I dont have enough experience to be able to answer that with any confidence, but I would think the tree savers were more important on the smaller young trees. Where I am at, we have a lot of big mature trees and I dont think hanging a hammock on them without a tree hugger would affect them to much. I still use webbing around the trees anyhow.
You really need that flat wide design of webbing to spread out the force. If there is one area that others could ban or cheer against hammock is it is harmful on the trees. This takes that out of the argument.
Pm me and I will send a set for free for you to have and try.

it can. its the right thing to do in the woods.
This debate has been argued ad naseum.
Like Dutch says, if we can just agree to use them and take this ammo out of anti-hammock officials, we are that much closer to getting all 50 states to agree, like Florida has. We can hang in all State parks, YEAH!
Dutch is a great guy and take him up on this offer. He may send a picture of himself, "he's easy on the eyes"
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
Look up the threads about the force on the hanging rope then divide that by the area of whatever is around the tree. A poorly hung hammock can put on quite a high point load that potentially will do damage. Wider straps solve the problem. Even if you do not care the Rangers do.
YMMV

Free advice worth what you paid for it. ;-)
I'd use tree huggers on the tarp, too, because the forces of wind and weather can be great.

Whooooo Buddy)))) All Secure in Sector Seven
As others have said, it's best to represent hammock camping as a tree friendly activity so anything that would show that to those who manage our parks and forests is a good thing. Also, damage to trees cannot be readily seen by just examining the bark. The cambium layer underneath the bark is what needs to be protected.
