Cost is another difference, one that matters a lot to me!

For like systems of capabilty cost is relatively close.... 40* KAQ and 40* JRB Shenandoah both are in the $180 range.....

I used synthetic for years "just in case" my bag got wet. After over 15 years of my bag never got wet (due to my paranoid protection of it) I decided to switch to down.

Back in my ground dwelling days, I noticed that my down sleeping bag was more comfortable then my old synth one. Maybe because it was lighter but it was all softer, and seemed to warm up quicker.

Good discussion... I've struggled off and on with the same question. Here in the SE, we frequently hit dew point during the night ('dew' to the relatively high humdidity during the day... I just added that part so I could make the pun). I often wake up next morning with a lot of condensate on the upper sides of my UQ... created, I'm assuming, when moisture given up by my body hits the cold night air and condenses, leaving behind man-sourced dew fallout on the nearest cold surfaces (eewww). So... I've been thinking of making a down UQ with silnylon side edges and DWR shell and liner. What are y'all's thoughts on that?
There's no such thing as bad weather... just bad gear.

Untill I got my JRB down UQ I was a hardcore synthetic user: "What if it gets WET?!?!?!" mind set.

In 35 years of camping on my own (Since leaving the nest) I have gotten my sleeping bag wet ONE time, & only the foot end, about 8" got damp. So, I took the plunge & went over to the down side. Don't get me wrong, I love the KAQ & the Ray Way synthetics, BUT: the No Sniv is ligher & compresses SO MUCH BETTER! So, soon as I can save up the $cratch I'm getting a Hudson River JRB underquiilt & switching the No Sniv to an overquilt.

I expect to get my quilts damp, I do after all camp in all weather so they will be dxposed to some form of water, either by my sweating or high humidity. But I always put my sleeping stuff inside a HEAVY DUTY plastic bag, so am not that worried about it, getting wet in my pack. And setting up the tarp before the hammock when it's raining allows the rest of my stuff to stay much drier: putting a dry quilt in / on a wet hammock = a wet quilt.

"MORE HAMMOCKING GEAR?!?!???" My wife says while rolling her eyes. My answer: "Sure, now I'll have 2 full set ups, just in case!"

if both are in the same price range then it is a no brainer to go with down.

makes me would why a synthetic quilt cost as much as down?

While making my Thermadrape KAQ it occurred to me that there was as much work involved as making one with Climashield. The labor is a far larger cost than the insulation.

The labor for a down quilt (baffles) should be much higher than a similar synthetic.
That being said, I have made 3 TQ/UQs and all were synthetic for 2 simple reasons.
Climashield was 1/2 the cost of down
My sewing skills are limited and the synthetic is very, very simple. Any mistakes are hidden inside
Given my choice, it would be down every time.

It doesn't appear to be a problem with the down-lovers in this thread, but I'm curious as to why...

I remember hearing that down lost its loft when compressed... is that not the case?
