    Tarp stakes

Just purchased the groundhog lookalikes from wally world. 4 stakes for $3! Couldn't pass them up...so now I'll go beat on them to see how they hold up. I'm not sure what kind of aluminum they're made of, I'll have to do some more research to find that answer. I'll post results when finished.

Word is they don't hold up well. I'm gentle with mine. But they are good and long, great for the deep duff we have around here, just don't try to force it into a tree root!

Since you got them, use them until there done for. I've used mine for a year now on multiple day hikes.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Since I already have these I think I'm going to do some experimenting. The website says they're 6061 aluminum so, I'm going to take them to work and heat treat them to see if I can make them a little stronger.

I have 2 sets which I cut down to the same size as the ground hogs.I have yet to bend them.6061 is aircraft grade ,but I figured they were something softer.I am sure if you use a hammer and drive them in rocky ground you can bend them, but like I said ,they work for me.

The process of heat treating aluminum is fairly complex to get a certain hardness. If you are thinking of heating them and just quenching you might end up with a very brittle stake.6061 is good stuff.I used it for many structural components on a homebuilt aircraft.

They work fine for the sandy soil here in FL. Once you start talking clay and rocks all bets are off. I'm curious about the heat treating but for $3 I think you'll be better off to toss them in the recycle bin and pick up another set if they get too bent up.

I've tried them. They work great in soft ground or deep duff, but bend like butter in frozen or hard ground. Real Groundhogs cost more, but are worth the extra money.

    Take it easy,
