My first attempt at a DL Hammock

Inspired by Lost Biker's Hammock, and guided by my millions of questions to him, I set out to make my own perfect (for me) DIY hammock. I've done ones before.

    Like this:

And they were always sloppy, folded hems, sewn and thrown together in 20 minutes. Add a Fronkey cocoon net, and that was it, I was hanging. But I wanted something I could actually be proud in / of.

I started with 12' 3" long, 60" wide fabric. After hemming, channels, whipping, the final length of the body is 11' x 58" About 6" longer than I intended on finishing, but that can be fixed if it becomes an issue, the excess length may also be taken up once I truly whip the ends.

16" down from the channel, I left a 27" gap between the layers. One on each end, on opposing sides. To allow access to the pocket between the layers.

The "Tubes" at either end are 6" long, atm.

This is step one, I'm still waiting for materials from DIY Gear Supply to finish it off. So the whipping is hideous, and the RL is nothing but a 105" long whoopie. But I couldn't wait to try it, take a 3 hour long power nap in it, then get pics up for you guys.

    Unweighted.. begging for an occupant.

My first rolled hems (and double stitching) EVER

The "Tube" at the ends, to allow bug net / zippers

Double Layered! I went this way, because its Wal-mart $1/yd non-ripstop nylon, and I'd rather be safe

    The foot end

    The Head End

The Hammock with the truck windshield reflector in between the layers

As soon as my order comes from DIY GS, I'll be adding a zippered, stowable bug net, side tie outs, a matching IX UQ that attaches to the hammock body via pack hooks.

Of course! I wanna be done now, but tomorrow is Sunday, and the mail man apparently needs a day off.

So I started making a Single Layer version of this in grey 1.9 Ripstop.. out of boredom. I'll be back later.. need to ummmm.. run some quality control tests on it...

Great job and excellent work! Glad I could help you. I, too, hate waiting for stuff from Scott - I have to do other unsavory things while I'm waiting, like mow the lawn, do maintenance, etc. It's like X-mas when the mail person throws the package on the porch!

I would also like to see how the gray 1.9 looks.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

Very nice. Glad to see someone else likes to use contrasting colors for the stitching. I find it makes it easier to see where I am sewing, the bad part is it makes my crooked lines stand out more.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
