My DIY Climashield Apex 5.0 UQ

Thought I would share my DIY underquilt I made from 5oz Climashield APEX. Can't believe how well this turned out and I am just tickled to death about it. I had some left over 1.7oz digital camo that I was making hammmocks with. Then found some olive green 1.1oz ripstop at Walmart ($1.50 yd) that I used as the inner liner. It's really a 3/4 underquilt as it's only 60" x 42". Weighs 16oz with stuff sack. Don't have the suspension on the long sides yet, so that may a add few ounces. I would like to give a shout out too scooterbrown and his post on his Apex Underquilt. Also too BadKarma375 and his post on his Apex TQ. That is next on my list. Thank you HF for all the great info here! Will need to wait a bit to try it out. Hope it gets me down to around 35 DegF. Was really surprised how it compresses. Not as good as down, but workable.

Curious on how many layers it took? I'm going to be starting on a DIY PLUQ but may make something for when it gets even colder net. Looks great!

Craig - Thanks, I was very pleased with it. And pretty easy to do. It's one layer of 5.0 Apex.

I'm working on a 5.0 apex UQ this weekend, also. It's not quite done yet. As I go along, I think I realize everything I should have done differently along the way...but I think it's going to work out okay when all is said and done.

Nice job. I made one using 6.0 oz apex and have had it easily down to the high 20s. Enjoy.

Great work! The camo looks good on an underquilt.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

I hear ya Sue. One of the biggest things I realized along the way from plan was sewing the nylon layers first then sew on the Apex vs pinning it all together then sewing it only one time. Made it a little easier.

Thanks All, it did turn out better than I expected, plus I enjoyed doing it.

Hey just wondering where you got your instructions or did you do this one a whim?
