    Amsteel Blue - 7/64 or 1/8?

I had my first hang over the weekend using my DIY hammock and absolutely fell in love with it.

I'd like to make some modifications as well as some accessories. First up is to make some whoopie slings. Seems like most of the DIY posts suggest 7/64 Amsteel but I see that the 1/8 has significantly greater strength, only an additional 1/64 in thickness and maybe $0.10 more per foot.

What am I missing here? Is there a reason to get 7/64 over the 1/8?

It's cheaper, smaller, lighter, and unless you weigh 600 pounds or more than all you need to hang in a hammock.

In all honesty, 7/64 is way more then you need.
People here are very safety conscious... and there is nothing wrong with that...
But when they are picking out 7/64 that is already with a pretty healthy safety margin built in.

You can always spend a little more, get a little thicker and a little stronger... But how much do you really need?

I "felt" safer at first with 1/8", plus it was all I could find locally. Doesn't seem right, at first, hanging by such small diameter rope but it works.

Alright. Thanks for everyone's' input. I'll pick up some 7/64 and have at it.

Some UL hikers even go for the thinner Dynaglide which still has a strenght of 1000 lbs, with 7/64 you are on the safe side.

50 feet ordered through Dutchware Gear. I'll have plenty for whoopies, soft shackles and enough left over to keep the ladies tied up in the trunk.

I use 1/8" UCRs because I don't want to worry about finding trees just the right distance apart or putting the straps at the right height. 1/8" allows a shallow hang angle between trees that can be far apart. With 1/8" material we are not slaves to the 30* hang angle, in other words.

Select your knots carefully for this application as amsteel is slippery and does not hold all knots well.
