Would like to purchase an self-infl. pad for my new Expedition. What would fit in nicely? I am on a budget.....less than or close to $50.
Suggestions?

I tried useing my self-infl pad when I left the ground, but found that by the time I had let out enough air for it to feel good I might as well have had a closed cell. My $.02
My ego said, SURE you can.
Half way in my body said OH NO YOU CAN'T

Thanks.
I have a thermarest closed foam pad (ridegerest) right now for tenting, but it is too huge to carry. What size do you recommend for backpacking?
I bought a blue closed cell foam pad at Walmart. It has worked good for me so far.
Unless you're using a SPE, or some other sort of side insulator, then the wide-blue-cheap pad is your best bet.
I started with a HH and I used the "petite" version of the Big Agnes Insulated pad which at 66", was perfect for my 5'10" frame. Used with a SPE since its only 20" wide.
You could get into a Jarbridge for $75 with the Arrowhead sale - might think seriously about that.

Even if you are using an SPE your best bet is a Walmart CCF pad.
Inflatable pads in a hammock are more of a "run what you brung" option than necessity. The way the hammock conforms provides the cushioning normally needed on the ground.
YMMV

Free advice worth what you paid for it. ;-)
Reflective bubble windshield sunscreen is top notch
I like my HH double bubble pad but it is just reflectix with a bound edge. You can go to Home Depot for a roll of reflectix. Durable, cheap and warm.
