    Pads are for ?

I see a lot of posts on Pads and questions on the best pad for Hammocking.
The way I see it (and this will be obvious as MY Opinion)
Pads are Isolation when used in a Hammock not so much for comfort. seein as how your not on the ground (unless you want to be)

Getting off the Ground and in to a hammock takes the hard ground out of the picture. and in the summer a Pad isn't needed.(Unless you want one) they have other uses.
If you have the right Hammock for you a pad just gets in the my way (warm weather)

In the colder months the Pad is added insulation along with a underquilt you can hang in colder temperatures with out the dreaded CBS (Cold Butt Syndrome)

There are more knowledgeable folks on here that can tell you the R-rating of the Pads that are out there but most of the time you can get away with a Good UQ (under quilt) or not, carry a pad if ya want its up to you.

    hope this helps

    IMO sWW

Buy a pad, try it out, if you dont need it or dont like it ya dont have to use it.

I like to carry a torso length pad for sitting and laying on the ground. If big miles are involved I lay down during rest breaks throughout the day to give the legs a rest.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

    Yep, Me to
I was just thinking the folks New to hanging would think a Pad was a need idem for hammocking.

we could cut Pack weight by just using a good UQ most of the time

I use a pad in place of an underquilt, not as a supplement. I'm shopping around for UQs too but I imagine I will take the pad along fairly often - with a pad you always have the option to go to ground if needed

I use a pad for a hitchhiking sign.
Occasionally for sitting upon and usually under my feet in the hammock when it's cold out.

Im not saying there is no use for a Pad just its not as important in Hammocking as to ground dwelling

    OK, I'm a pad hater.
That said, I do think they have uses. I would not be able to do sub zero hangs in my Yetis if I didn't have a pad under my feet. I can, and have used my pack under my feet. But, that brings a new group of problems. I will also admit to having unrolled my pad and laid it out under the whole hammock on a couple of nights; just too cold for the quilt alone.

I guess it depends on your style of hanging. If you are into pushing the boundaries of comfort in a hammock when the weather is truly brutal out, I don't think you'd be caught dead without a pad. Even if it is just for emergencies.

i think hammocks are most comfortable with out any pad. an UQ is the obvious choice for me, then. if i had a summer weight UQ i would not use a pad at all. unless, in combination with my UQ in temps below 25° but those trips are very rare.

there are also some hammocks that support pad use very well, non intrusive and quite comfortable. Bridge styles work great with pads. But for me, the bulk of a full pad (24" or wider) is much larger than an equally temp-rated UQ, so im going for less bulk.
