I'm using 1.75mm Dyneema, which I chose because of low stretch, high strength, low water retention, and small packed size. However, it does put quite a bit of pressure on the tree bark and, in wind, starts to damage it by sawing back and forth. I didn't noticed any discernable damage to the Dyneema. But, it did make me wonder if that was an issue. I was able to find a piece of dead wood to place inside the cord at the highest stress point. That stopped the bark damage but put quite a bit of stress on the cord since the stress was now concentrated into a 2in length of the cord.
I have not had problem in Natl. Parks with hammocks but the rangers I've talked to are quite adamant about making sure there's no damage to the trees. So, I'm also trying to be careful not to poison things for fellow hangers.
I thought about running the ridgeline ends through a 8-12in length of flexible plastic tubing (e.g. aquarium tubing) to stop that from happening.
I'd prefer a solution that will pack up with my tarp inside its storage bag and doesn't retain water.
Any ideas/suggestions?
