What methods to prevent tarp cord from sawing on tree

I'm using 1.75mm Dyneema, which I chose because of low stretch, high strength, low water retention, and small packed size. However, it does put quite a bit of pressure on the tree bark and, in wind, starts to damage it by sawing back and forth. I didn't noticed any discernable damage to the Dyneema. But, it did make me wonder if that was an issue. I was able to find a piece of dead wood to place inside the cord at the highest stress point. That stopped the bark damage but put quite a bit of stress on the cord since the stress was now concentrated into a 2in length of the cord.

I have not had problem in Natl. Parks with hammocks but the rangers I've talked to are quite adamant about making sure there's no damage to the trees. So, I'm also trying to be careful not to poison things for fellow hangers.

I thought about running the ridgeline ends through a 8-12in length of flexible plastic tubing (e.g. aquarium tubing) to stop that from happening.

I'd prefer a solution that will pack up with my tarp inside its storage bag and doesn't retain water.

    Any ideas/suggestions?

You can put sticks under the line as it wraps around the tree. Or use some 1/2" webbing or mule tape tree straps.

    tube webbing

1/2" tubular webbing works to. I've used it when I was tent camping and carried a tarp to use as a shelter for general lurking about. Just run the cord through the webbing. Protects the trees and packs up nicely as well.

I use a similar line for my tarp guy lines. I've rigged them all with shock cord so the are self tensioning. I then attach the ridge line ends to the toggles at my hammock webbing. I try to keep the toggles as close to the trees as possible. The shock chord picks up the slack when I get in the hammock.

Just sewed some tree straps for my tarp today. It's 1" material real cheap at Wal-Mart, rated only 168# but should suffice for the intended use: http://www.walmart.com/ip/SportRack-...Downs/15611304 Paid less than the link says and got two approx. 6' straps from one, leaving me one.

Originally had mule tape rated at 2600# -- will use that for a hammock.

I've never really worried about it before. Even if it is increadably windy there isn't enough dynamic shift on the line to cause the tree damage.
I'll check the tree next time I tear down.

I do the stick thing, doesn't cost me any weight penalty and you can always find sticks layin around. Trick I figured out is to hang tarp with a tad bit of slack and as I put the sticks under it it starts pulling it tight, if its not tight enough I add a little larger stick until it gets nice and tight. Takes me about an extra minute in set up

I read somewhere that you can pull the core out of paracord and run zingit freely through the center.
