The porch net was twice as heavy than the bugnet.

I have thought about this after seeing Dejoha's shelter that fit his
whole family in a screened area.
Having the net reach the ground, you could have Rock pockets, and
stake points to keep it there... this would give you alot of open area.

I would love to be able to fashion a chair and sit in a porch area.

I have even thought about how to modify my tarps so that they
function as a better "porch". I am envisioning adding tarp ridgeline
tie outs that are off center, so that I can get a larger porch on
one side. This would allow me to tailor the shade to where I am
hanging and how the wind is blowing better.

Good luck! It is a Forest Service campground, and I contacted them about rules and regs, as well, but they never got back to me.

Funny, I was just thinking about this over the weekend. Please share your photos and impressions on the good and bad.

I am curious how much total weight this added to your tarp, and how effective it is vs a zippered bugnet on the hammock. This might be ok for car camping, but summertime ultralight gram weenies might not like the additional "unnecessary" weight. Even quasi-gram weenies like me might raise an eyebrow over the additional weight, but then I guess the bugs don't bother me as much as others.

I hate getting mosquito bites, so I'd rather hand a cramped "no-fly" zone that was 100% bug-free than a much larger one that wasn't. Personally, I usually worry more about adding to the packed volume of my gear than adding an extra ounce or two, so bulk would be another concern. That said, I applaud the creativity and out-of-the-box thinking on this project.

Lots of integrated-net camping hammocks weigh in the 20-24 ounce range.

My lightest DIY netless hammock to date weighs about 8 ounces.

If you could build a mesh bug enclosure that added less than a pound, it might be reasonable added weight for many backpackers -- if it works well.

Nothing is reasonable added weight for true gram weenies (among whose number I do not count myself).

Good point about the bulk of the rig. Less bulky rigs are my preference as well, but I dislike bug bites as much as most. I use a ULA Circuit as my backpack, so space is somewhat limited for trips lasting longer than 3 days.

LOL you are exactly right about the Circuit, which is what I used currently as well; it's layout as compared to a more traditional pack is so different that I find I really have to pay attention to the size and order of things I pack in it. It honestly feels like a smaller pack then it's technical specifications suggest. I have no trouble hitting a very respectable base wait for three seasons out of the year, but given that the Catalyst only weighs about a half pound more, I wonder sometimes if it wouldn't be a better four-season alternative that helps me avoid worrying about the bulk of my gear.

This sounds like an interesting project. I think I remember reading about a backpacker that has netting strung off a tarp that did not reach the ground and got away with it because mosquitos did not fly close to the ground.
