    screen porch/ bug net

I have sewed 1ft of bug net to the edges of my superfly and it has worked out nice. I am now designing a screen porch to attach to one side so I can have a breeze and more open airy space free from bugs.
Has anyone else tried the screen porch idea?

I haven't, but I want to hear how it works. I would love to have a little more space between me and the bug net--then maybe the whining mosquitoes would be farhter from my ear and not wake me up.

Ya, as soon as I can get it all dialed in I'll post some pics. So far it seems to add about 3oz. for the permanent/lower bug netting, and another 6oz. for the removable screen porch portion. Seems acceptable to me since I live in the Sierra where bugs and cold last most of the season.

Is your plan to go around the whole hammock, both sides and ends and hang the netting all the way to the ground?
I think that's the only way to 100% keep out the bugs. Otherwise any opening even near the ground, they'll find a way.
Interesting concept and I may adopt it... keep us posted

Bug net around the edges of the tarp is lighter that bug net enclosed hammock and much bigger bug free area. ... I like it!

That sounds great, Sierraflyguide! I will definitely be watching this thread! Oh, and maybe since you live in the area you can have a little chat with the anti-hammock host of the Gull Lake campground

Have not heard of the porch idea for hammocks but have seen it on motor homes and tents. Zippers seem to work but velcro loads with trash. No idea on omnitape.

Do recall some hiker writing up extending a bug net to the ground for a PCT hike. Got him a smaller bug free area to eat and dress in. I'm thinking something like 3x7 or 3x8 ft type of deal.
    YMMV

Ya, saw your complaint the other day. I do live in June Lake, have always seen hammocks at Gull Lake campground and was shocked to hear of the new host and their problem attitude. I'll try to teach them the benefits of hammocks and their low impact. Wish me luck!
