    O-rings failed

I just got my first hammock in the mail today. I planned on using tree straps made from webbing and O-rings to tighten it up. Well my rings didn't hold. Could my webbing be too slick for them to bite? I ended up just tying the straps in a simple slip knot to the rings.

Yeah if you use rap rings you need a slippery half hitch to hold it.

Always tie a back up knot.

I have a video on YouTube showing my set up with descending rings. http://youtu.be/yZk0I5FRcno

When you prussic the rings together they have to be tight, tight, tight. They should actually splay open a little. I know that sounds counter-intuitive and it is not usually brought up in the ring disscussions anymore. The rings only bite the webbing properly if the rings are bound really tight.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Thanks everyone. EMH, your video helped me tremendously. I didn't think to use a backup knot.

I've been a bit paranoid about falling. I am using webbing rated for 10,000 pounds and the metal rings are rated for 5,000 pounds. I weigh 130...

It may or may not have anything to do with your problem, but I wonder if the 10000 lbs webbing it too stiff (or wide) to wrap tightly around the rings and grip.

We usually use 1" wide 1500-3000 lbs webbing

Always use slippery half hitches after you have the rings adjusted. Also, make sure the rings are held together correctly at the rope end, and make sure the webbing goes through flat.

+1 - I was thinking of the same thing. I actually ordered the thin 1,500lb from shipper supply for the set-ups for the scouts.

Keep in mind - All webbing with rings will slip a little until it bites down hard. And a half hitch is a must, unless you are using a good cinch buckle.

Hang low if you need to build confidence on your set-up :-)
