Who cares about the biner you are using

This has been brought before but it doesn't hurt to bring it up again.

Use Carabiners that are rated for climbing.

My wife and I were hanging in the back yard and I used a non climbing rated biner to secure the loop end of the tree strap back to its self once it was wrapped around the tree (just moved some of my gear and could not find the good stuff). Figured this would put the least amount of stress on the biner. As the wife only weights about 160 I figured it would be ok for her to test out her new hammock for a few minutes until I could locate some extra Dutch Clips. Told the wife before hand so we set up the hammock real low to the ground in case something did happen.

The wife hung in her hammock for about 30 minutes. When we took down her hammock we found that the biner had bent way out shape. The tree straps were still attached but there is no telling how long it would continue to hold in its current condition. Of course the biner used on the other tree worked just fine.

Just glad we were doing this under controlled conditions.

Indeed, climbing biners should always be used IMO. Glad she didn't hit the ground!

That would have been an expensive gear malfunction, because if she had fallen then you would have been on your way to the jewelry store

Glad you seen it was bending before either of you got hurt.

    Close call for her butt.....
I'm assuming you'd have gotten in a bit of trouble!

This is an excellent example of how important biners are.

Do you have any clue why one of the biners deformed, while
the other one did not? Was it the foot end that was higher
that deformed? Or was it because of where she sat?

As I stated, I told her it was a possibility so the hammock was set up so she was only a foot off the ground.

if she had fallen then you would have been on your way to the jewelry store
Luckily she is not into that kind of bling

I have no idea. The hammock was hung about the same height at both ends. Both biners were from the same lot so I guess its just one of those crap shots you undertake when you push the envelope. The gear was not put thru any unusual stress (other than not being rated for the intended use). The wife just got into the hammock and laid there for about 30 minutes and then I helped her get out because it was so low to the ground.

I posted to try and remind our newer hangers what can happen if you are not careful.

I don't use biners on the loop end of the tree strap. I just run the other end of the strap through the loop. If the loop is going to give away it will with or without the biner.
So far no problems but there is always the first time

I have done that. Works pretty good and means one less piece of gear to carry.

Was just trying to show our new hangers what can happen.

It probably caused one to fail and not the other because
the forces are split disproportionately due to the weight being distributed disproportionately.

Of course another option could just be the biner that failed was weaker. There can be significant differences in the quality of manufactured products. Especially if they are not put through any kind of quality control measures.

Just out of curiosity. Was it the biner holding up the head end of the hammock?

A timely warning, and one that should be repeated often, thanks. I saw this same scene playe out at a group hand in north Ga., the biner was sprung open badly, and why it had not dropped the occupant is anybody's guess. I did point this out to him, but he didn't seem too concerned. You got to wonder.

As a noob, my question would be how do I know I am buying a climbing rated carabiner? There are no local stores to be able to buy from in person and I amsort of limited to mail order, such as Ebay, Amazon, or someother outfitter. Sure they can list the strength, but then again the vendor can tell me anything.
