    Unwanted Night Time Visitors??

Has anyone got any stories of people / animals come calling whilst your hanging during the night??

Just wondering what i'd do. I once had something eat a shoe and carry it off when i found it the next morning it was chewed up but I didn't hear anything, I was in my tent with ear plugs in, but my mate said the next day he heard everything and lay there all night with a knife.

Love to here some and what you did.

I had an animule eat a big hole in a synthetic wool sock last weekend. He now has a really nice warm nest. Skippy had borrowed my crocs while at camp. He returned them to me later that night after I had gone to sleep. Never heard him come up to the hammock. That kinda worried me as I thought I was a light sleeper...makes me wonder who else has been visiting during the night. Other than the normal birds and stuff in the morning, can't say I have noticed anything else nearby the hammock, but who knows?

Think I might start tying everything up in one of the trees! Last thing I want on a backpacking trip is to lose one of my shoes!

    What's a synthetic wool sock? A blend?

I haven't been touched yet... I suspect I move too much to have anyone bug me directly. did have some critters stand around my little campsite and argue with each other for a while, but they ran off before I figured out what they were.

Most of my stuff is under the tarp with me or hanging from the suspension.

I brought my dog camping with me and tied him up next to the tree I was hanging from... bad choice he had ripped off all of my tarp tie outs, luckily it was a blue poly tarp.

Smartwool is one example. I got these at Sports Authority for about $7 a pair.

I hammocked a little to close to the underbrush one trip and woke up with a chipmunk on my hip one morning. I moved and he ran off.

Nothing like getting close to nature.
    I sleep in the trees.

Over the years during nights at Scout camp, I have been visited by a black bear at Philmont - it actually put it's foot under the wall tent and patted me down -as well as skunks in local camp. One of my favorites was the night a deer wandered in, whistled at me and stomped the ground several times. Field mice are common - they walk all over the tent roof. Racoons make a mess of camp kitchens and garbage cans until you remember to critter proof your campsite.

I woke up one night when sleeping in my backyard with my hammock bouncing up and down. When I looked up it was my cat who had jumped the fence and was trying to walk down my suspension straps. Then one other night in the backyard I had my dogs out with me and they started barking like crazy when I got out of the hammock to see what they were barking at I saw this big possum walking along the top of the fence.

You're not likely to do anything, as you wouldn't hear anything coming. Why would you wear earplugs... camping? You're missing out on half the fun!
