    Great, cheap splicing tool

A single strand of 18 guage copper wire.

Stip off the jacket if it has one, fold it in half, and you're done. It's small enough and stiff enough to push through 7/64 amsteel without even bunching it. I've made two sets of whoopies, and adjustable ridge lines with the same piece of wire and it shows no sign of wear whatsoever.

This stuff costs next to nothing in bulk. Better still, it can be salvaged from old phone cord. The small round 4 conductor stuff (known as JK) works best. Newer CAT3 and CAT5 is 24 gauge, so it's quite a bit smaller. 24ga is less stiff than 18 and it might not hold up to all the pulling. If you know a phone guy ask him for 3-4 feet of it, and he'll probably give you 3-4 dozen yards of it instead.

Yep, that's exactly what I used. It was left over in my house from construction. The loop on my first one broke after 3 or 4 sets of whoopies, so I'm on my second now. Cheap and easy, durable enough.

I use stainless safety wire. It's the stuff used to wire nuts together on race cars and motorcycles. Not an everyday household item, but it's killer for splicing.

That thin wire you can find in the picture hanging section at your local hardware store works great. A couple dollars for a roll. Worked great to make several for the scouts to use while splicing their own whoopie slings.

+1 for the stainless safety wire - very slick!
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

I went the quitar string route. See thread below. All excellent ideas. That's the beauty of the forum. Many paths to splicing happiness.

Edit: It also gets a double use as a way to pull line for drawstrings on all my DIY sack madness...or is that awesomeness!?!

I've tried everything from guitar strings to copper wire and the .020" safety wire is perfect if you double it!
